Data Retention Policy
Version 0.3 · updated October 22, 2026 · All versions
The short version
- Your classes, files, notes and reports stay until you delete them. We don't expire them on a timer.
- Records the app keeps for itself (logs, saved AI results, lists, old research) are deleted automatically on a fixed schedule. The job runs every day.
- Deleting a class or your account removes your files, reports and what you added to course insights. Shared course topic names and Test Plan research stay with the course, on their own schedule.
- Backups are the one place deleted data can stay for a while. We're setting a schedule for deleting them.
Kept until you delete it
Classes, uploaded files and the text we read from them, notes, hints and hint photos, quizzes, flashcards, sprints, mistakes, grades and exam reports.
Invite links you make and the record of who joined with them: until the class or either account is deleted. A link stops working 150 days after it's made, or when you turn it off.
What you added to course insights: while you have the class and the setting is on. Turning it off, deleting the class or deleting your account removes it, and the course's counts are recalculated.
Your age statement, your agreement to the Terms and Privacy Policy, the add-class course-policy statement and the Global Privacy Control note: until you delete your account.
After you delete your account, we keep one small record that the account agreed to the Terms and Privacy Policy: a one-way scrambled code made from the account's id (it can't be turned back into your email), which document and version, and when. We keep it 4 years, then delete it.
Guest accounts: until deleted, the same as an account with an email. If we ever start deleting unused guest accounts, this page will say how long first.
Deleted on a schedule
Saved AI results (so we don't pay for the same work twice): 90 days.
Daily-limit records: 90 days.
Security records: 180 days.
AI cost logs (no content): about 13 months.
Feature counts (which parts of the app you've reached): about 13 months.
Paid-plans email list: about 18 months.
Privacy requests sent from the Contact page: 2 years.
Test Plan research runs, with their sources and findings (the newest finished run for each course stays): 1 year.
Old versions of course insights (the live copy stays): 1 year.
Shared course topic names that no class uses any more (counted from their last update): 2 years.
Requests from professors and schools: 3 years.
Course codes students added to a school's course list that no class has used since (no personal data): 1 year.
The record that a deleted account agreed to the Terms and Privacy Policy: about 48 months.
Shared course data
Some data belongs to a course, not to one student: the course's shared topic names, course insights and Test Plan research. Professor names and what the research says about a professor's courses are personal data about that professor, so we limit how long we keep them too.
Their periods are in the list above: research runs 12 months (the newest finished run for each course stays, so the course keeps a Test Plan), old versions of course insights 12 months (the live copy stays), unused shared topic names 24 months, course codes students added to a school's list that no class uses 12 months, requests from professors and schools 3 years.
Professors can ask for a correction or opt out at any time on the For Professors and Schools page.
Special cases
Copyright notices: the notice, what was removed and each step taken are kept as the record of how it was handled. Strikes and in-app notices on your account are deleted with it. The notice record stays, without the link to you.
Saved AI results from a class you deleted: these can stay up to 90 days after they were made, then the daily job deletes them. Deleting your account removes yours right away.
AI cost logs: when you delete your account, the rows stay for cost history, but with no link to you and the scrambled network code cleared.
Legal holds: if the law requires us to keep something (for example a court order), we pause deleting just those records and note why.
Copies at the services we use (Anthropic, Vercel, Supabase, Tavily) follow their own schedules. The AI Disclosure and Privacy pages say what we know about them.
Backups: we sometimes make a full backup of the database. Backups are kept on an encrypted drive, and each one is deleted within 30 days (we keep at most the 4 newest), so deleted data is gone from backups within 30 days.
How to delete
Delete a class from the bottom of its page, or everything with "Delete all my data" on the Account page. You can also ask through the Contact page.
